Laguna Lang Co Golf Club – Faldo’s Keenly Awaited Course Officially Opens in Central Vietnam

Thua Thien Hue Province, March 2013 – Sir Nick Faldo will be in Central Vietnam from 16 to 18 March 2013 to officiate the opening of Laguna Lăng Cô Golf Club on 17 March 2013.

Laguna Lăng Cô Golf Club, Asia’s newest golf course, has welcomed golfers in a pre-opening phase for the past three months, and will mark its official opening on 17 March 2013, with an exciting golf event over the weekend from 16 to 18 March 2013.

Sir Nick will spend two days at the home of his creation, the Laguna Lăng Cô integrated resort, to officially open the 18-hole championship course. Laguna Lăng Cô is also home to the all-pool-villa resort of Banyan Tree Lăng Cô and Angsana Lăng Cô, not to mention the Banyan Tree Spa and Angsana Spa Lăng Cô.

Specially-invited guests and 25 international media representatives will be invited to participate in a range of official functions. Media from around the world, including the Golf Channel in the US and leading writers from the United Kingdom, as well as others from Japan, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Australia, will attend. This event is anticipated to be one of the most high-profile course opening events in Asia in the past decade.

The six-time Major Champion’s design of the Laguna Lăng Cô golf course, situated between Da Nang and Hue on Vietnam’s Central Coast, has been a major talking point for the past two years among golfers and tour operators in Asia and around the world.

Laguna Lăng Cô Golf Club is vastly unique in the region and the distinction of the course lies in its variation. Starting in a rice-paddy environment, the course has been cleverly routed alongside woodlands at the base of a stunning mountain range, through sand and waste areas, to the ocean side and back to the clubhouse, with magnificent views of the whole exotic, bucolic landscape.

No other course in Vietnam, or perhaps even in Asia, has such a varied environment. And Faldo, the master tactician on course as one of the greats of the modern era, has ensured that players on his new layout will have to think about every shot. There are numerous strategically-placed bunkers – including in the middle of fairways – waste and sand areas, creeks and ponds as well as rolling fairways with sloping lies to keep players on their toes.

At the design stage, Sir Nick Faldo said the layout would incorporate “sand dunes, rice-paddy fields, trees and scrub, wonderful exposed rock formations as well as a section of dramatic coastline and a routing that will visit each of these features on both nines”.

“For this part of Vietnam, it’s a real hidden gem. Players will need to plot their way through some very picturesque surroundings. The course will sport a ruggedly-handsome look with a real sense of place, he commented.”

The 6958 yard, par 71 Faldo Designs layout, which was personally supervised from start to finish by Sir Nick himself, aspires to challenge for the top position among Vietnam’s 30 golf courses and achieve many accolades when it matures. It now sits proudly along with a few other golf courses in the area, to form the new Golf Coast of Vietnam.
