Sir Nick Faldo’s course was voted ‘Vietnam’s Best Course 2019’ at the Vietnam Best Course Awards
Laguna Lăng Cô, Hue, Vietnam: Laguna Golf Lăng Cô, designed by six-time major winner Sir Nick Faldo, has been voted as ‘Vietnam’s Best Golf Course’ for 2019 at the Vietnam Best Course Awards. The club was celebrated and presented with its award at a ceremony held in Hanoi.
The course fought off competition from over 50 other golf courses in Vietnam, of 18 holes or more, to be named as ‘Vietnam’s Best Golf Course’. The awards saw over 380,000 online votes registered, four times higher than those made during the 2017 awards.
The course is regarded as one of the most innovative and unique in the world. Now a Faldo Signature design, the course has many elements that makes it stand out not only from the rest of the courses in Vietnam, but also in the world. Golfers encounter numerous different experiences during a round at Sir Nick’s ‘paradise in Vietnam’, including tropical Jungle, seaside sand dunes and ancient rice paddies which surround the edge of several holes on the course.
The rice paddies are not just for show. Harvested twice a year, they yield up to 20 tons of rice that are used to support the local community and donated to families and seniors in the area. A family of water buffalo also act as Bio-mowers, helping to protect the traditional Vietnamese landscape, whilst managing the rice paddies by eating excess weeds that would otherwise require machinery to manage.
Laguna Golf Lăng Cô has been growing rapidly throughout the last few years, which reflects the number of golfers, both local and foreign, who have travelled to play the course in search of these unique experiences. It shows how Laguna Golf Lăng Cô has created a combination of a great championship course alongside extensive practice facilties.
The course is also the host venue for the Faldo Series Asia Grand Final, held every March, that gives young, up and coming players the chance to develop the skills and attitudes needed to make it as a professional player in the future. The Resort is the perfect venue for large golf tournaments as it boasts three hotels on site, both the Banyan Tree Villas and the Angsana Lang Co hotels are located a short walk from the golf course while the Laguna Park Town Homes are located along the 18th fairway.
Speaking after collecting the award in Hanoi, Adam Calver, Director of Golf for Laguna Golf Lang Co, said: “To be named Vietnam’s Best Golf Course for 2019 is a massive achievement for Laguna Lang Co Resort . We are very proud to have been given this award and it recognizes all the hard-work and effort that has been poured into upgrading our conditions and overall golf experience in recent year. The passion and dedication by everyone associated with the club is inspirational, our entire team is committed to providing a unique experience, unlike any other course in the world, so that it attracts both domestic and international golfers to come and play the best that Vietnam has to offer.”
The Vietnam Best Golf Course Awards, held by Vietnam Golf Magazine in association with the Vietnam Golf Association, Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, and Vietnam Administration of Sports were launched in 2007 and have since become recognized with great notice by the golf community, as well as by domestic and foreign golf investors.
The awards were launched with the aim of promoting Vietnam as an attractive destination for both tourism and golf. It wanted to encourage competition between golf courses within Vietnam and to make sure that they were all contributing to increasing the high-quality golf products that were on offer throughout the country. Over the last 10 years there has been a considerable effort made by investors to upgrade the golf courses within Vietnam and to focus on design, coaching and training and providing world-class services when developing new golf courses in Vietnam.
After an initial online voting round, each of the courses were inspected by one of the judging panel members, with the results being sent back to the judging panel, which was made up of the Vietnam Golf Association, Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, Vietnam Administration of Sports, and international golf experts. The panel included USGA-accredited golf course raters and R&A Level 3 referee Hew Kwee Fah and Alan Yew, as well as GolfAsian’s Managing Director Mark Siegel.
